​This is your opportunity to see what a complete hazelnut operation can look like in the Driftless region of Wisconsin.  Our host, Mary Hovel, will show us her operation including mature 2 acres of production, a mechanical harvester, and drying and de-husking equipment.  Joining Mary will be the American Hazelnut Company, a grower-owned hazelnut processing and marketing company with more than 20 grower-members in the Upper Midwest.  Learn more about the company, how to get involved, and sample their amazing products all made with Midwest-grown hazelnuts!

Our host, Josh Stolzenburg, will lead us in a tour of his mature hazelnut planting.  Jason Fischbach will introduce us to the UMHDI 1st Generation Selections and discuss the germplasm trial at Sandbox Farm.  Special guest, Hailey Shanovich from the University of Minnesota, will be on site to discuss insect pests of hazelnuts.

​​​We'll start at the Ashland Go-First Farm near Ashland, WI to tour a brand new 3-acre hazelnut planting and learn what it takes to successfully establish hazelnuts.  We'll then caravan up to Bayfield to see a mature hazelnut planting at the UMHDI Germplasm Trials.  We'll then visit Superior View Farm in Bayfield to learn more about hazelnut seedling production and ongoing propagation research.

The Savanna Institute will host our first stop of the field day and give us a tour of their brand new North Farm near Spring Green.  This working agroforestry farm is being developed as a model of what agroforestry can do.  We'll tour their brand new hazelnut planting and learn more about their plans and vision for the Farm.

Our host, Paul Ronsheim, will give us a tour of his mature hazelnut planting and talk about his more than ten years of experience growing hazelnuts.  This is a great chance to see mature hazelnut shrubs.  We'll also tour his DIY de-husking set up.  A mechanical harvester will also be on-site so you can see what kind of equipment is used for machine harvesting.
